May 8th 00:15 Mussel Bank

Beaumaris Lifeboat was called out last night at 00.15 by the HM Coastguard in response to a call received by mobile phone from a 28ft fishing boat that had engine failure.  The fishing boat with three men on board had left Caernarfon at 19.00 on Monday.    The crew of Beaumaris RNLI conducted a search of the waters off Caernarfon and were joined by a SAR Helicopter and Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat.  The fishing boat was located by the SAR Helicopter off a Mussel Bank near Newborough Beach.  Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat was stood down and Beaumaris Lifeboat proceeded to the Mussel Bank where one of the Lifeboat crew was put on board the fishing boat to assist the three men on to the lifeboat.  As one of the men had onset hypothermia and the other two were suffering with the cold and sea sickness, they were winched from the lifeboat on to the helicopter who then transferred them to hospital.      Antony Robinson, Beaumaris RNLI helm said;  “The weather conditions were such that it wasn’t suitable for us to tow the fishing boat so I asked HM Coastguard to retask Porth Dinllaen to assist with the tow.  Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat towed the fishing boat to the Menai Strait and we then took over and towed the boat into Slate Quay at Caernarfon.”   Beaumaris Lifeboat then proceeded back to the Beaumaris Lifeboat Station returning at 04.15.
